Each year, in recognition of Arbor Week, the Town’s Forestry Section offers schools across Oakville the opportunity to educate their grade four students on the importance and maintenance of trees in our urban forest. In 2007, 19 schools in Oakville accepted that challenge.
In addition, to planting its tree, St. Luke’s Catholic School, moved from a Silver Standing in the Ontario Ministry of Education’s Ecoschool Program to a possible Gold Standing, with the help of the Town of Oakville, when its students were treated to the story of “Respect for Mother Earth” by The Canadian Forestry Association Ambassador Daniel Richer.
In a dramatic one-hour storytelling performance, Mr. Richer, storyteller, actor and forest ambassador, shares with the students the richness of aboriginal culture and history and knowledge of Mother Earth, who is Turtle Island’s (North America) great teacher. His legends and stories speak of respect and harmony among all living things, from the smallest blade of grass to the greatest of bears. The stories show how the people of the world are an important part of this great circle of life.
The Town of Oakville provides Town TV presentations in streaming media format. Streaming media offers an increased level of convenience, particularly for lower-speed internet connections, by eliminating the need for users to download an entire file before it can be presented. In addition to our live streams, all past presentations are archived on Town TV, ensuring easy, on-demand access with the ability to pause, fast-forward and rewind.
